Date of death:
We later learn that he is even willing to kill those who become a threat, as shown through his murder of Peter Russo after he threatened to expose Underwood along with himself and Zoe Barnes when she realises that Underwood murdered Russo. He is a more than capable political maneuverer and can act warm, jolly and caring to people to gain their trust. He has no qualms of killing people or ruining their lives and careers if it serves his goals.
Episodes
The Underwoods convince Doug to take the fall for killing Zoe, and the leaker is revealed to be Frank himself. The leaks are revealed to be part of Frank's master plan to resign the presidency to Claire, believing his thirst for power can be better achieved in the private sector, working alongside his wife's presidency. Frank, concerned about Secretary Durant's intention to testify at the impeachment hearing, pushes her down a short flight of stairs upon accepting her resignation, hospitalizing her.
Presidency of Frank Underwood
In reality, Underwood begins an elaborate plan behind the President's back. Frank's wife Claire runs an NGO, the Clean Water Initiative, which she uses to cultivate her own power; she seeks to expand its scope to the international stage, often using Frank's connections. Claire shares her husband's cold-hearted, ruthless pragmatism and lust for power, and they frequently scheme together to ensure the success of each other's ventures. They both work with Remy Danton, a corporate lobbyist and former Underwood staffer, to secure funds for their operations and expand their influence. In 2017, following allegations of sexual misconduct against Spacey, Netflix terminated their relationship with the actor.
With the special election in chaos, Underwood convinces the Vice President to step down and run for his old position of governor – leaving the Vice Presidency open to Underwood, as was his plan all along. Underwood is introduced to Missouri billionaire Raymond Tusk, Walker's friend and advisor. Underwood counter-proposes to Tusk that they work together to fulfill both their interests, which Tusk accepts.

Father:

After pulling strings with superdelegates, the votes stack up with Claire. Catherine Durant announces that she is withdrawing at the stage, and encourages the delegates to vote for Claire. Claire becomes the nominee for the vice president.During the DNC voting, Conway calls Underwood out for his failure to act on the terrorist group ICO. The private meeting results in no change of policy, but instead a tense conversation. Conway reminds Underwood he is behind in the polls by double digits and says that Underwood is desperate to win.
"We knew that we wanted the end to feel surprising but inevitable," Gibson says. One of the beautiful things about the direct address [in which Underwood faces the camera and does a soliloquy], which is something we outright stole from the BBC version, which they stole from Shakespeare ... It gives us access to [Underwood] in ways that the public can never have access to. With her new Cabinet in place, Claire decides to undertake a new, progressive, agenda. The Shepherds, meanwhile, continue to plot her downfall, enlisting the help of Brett Cole, an ambitious Congressman who seeks to become Speaker of the House.
Season 1 (
Underwood was elected at the age of 25 to the South Carolina State Senate as one of the youngest members in the state's legislative history after graduating from Harvard in 1984. He was re-elected to the state senate at 29 in 1988 for his second, and last, term as a State Senator. We’ve seen Frank spend so much time with his right-hand man Doug Stamper in the Capitol that we can’t imagine not visiting The Hill. There are plenty of tours you can take where all the wheeling and dealing goes down. You can sign up to take a tour of Congressman or Senator’s offices, or one of the entire Capitol itself.
Forget Right And Wrong: 'House Of Cards' Is About Pragmatism And Power
Underwood goes to the Jordan valley to meet with Petrov months later, and Petrov agrees to relinquish control of the Jordan Valley if Claire steps down as ambassador to the United Nations. Claire ultimately steps down, though this strains the relationship between Claire and Underwood. Despite urging from Claire to read a forged apology, Corrigan hung himself in his jail cell, prompting Claire to publicly shame Petrov. Either way, after the debate Underwood takes charge and garners support when a child dies during school hours. He arranged a meeting with Spinella to come to a compromise which Underwood had promised.
In his senior year, his grades suffered when he volunteered for a U.S. Senate campaign in the fall 1980 and was nearly expelled from the military college. Despite his poor grades, Underwood was accepted and graduated from Harvard Law School in 1984. He had a sexual and romantic relationship while in military college with another cadet, Tim Corbet. His father was a peach farmer in Gaffney, South Carolina, who died of a heart attack at the age of 43. Underwood has stated that he and his father had nothing in common whatsoever, and upon his father's death, he felt neither regret nor remorse.
After Underwood secures an open spot in the Pennsylvania Governorship race by killing Peter Russo, he begins to influence the Vice President Jim Matthews to run. Previously, he had gotten Jim Matthews to campaign with Peter Russo, where he (the Vice President) was reintroduced to the love and adulation of a constituency that loved him. This reminded the Vice President of his glory days as a politician, the glory days that had not continued in his Vice Presidency.
And politicians, since the beginning of politics, have found ways to manipulate those stories — and here we just get access to the manipulation. After Frank begins his vice presidential duties, Claire becomes close with the First Lady and learns Walker's marriage is strained. He meets Xander Feng, a Chinese businessman and ally of Tusk's, to engage in back-channel negotiations that Frank intentionally scuttles at the expense of Tusk's credibility.

Done mainly through back channels with Democratic governors, this is officially done in the name of safety, but in practice disenfranchises rural Republican voters. To keep the strategy of fear going, Doug blackmails hacker Aidan Macallan into launching a massive cyberattack on the NSA, slowing down Internet traffic and wiping out hundreds of thousands of files. On Election Day, the result hinges on Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Ohio. Underwood's political machine stages a terrorist attack in Knoxville, Tennessee, which is pinned on a local suspected ICO sympathizer.
The day after Underwood's Iowa victory, Claire says that she is leaving Underwood, and flies to Texas to stay with her mother. Underwood, while in New Hampshire, continues his campaign under much stress without Claire. She pulls a piece of the broken mirror and stabs Underwood in the gut.
Once Usher begins working for them, they release the tapes anyway, which costs Conway the election. Underwood is now President-elect, but his past once again comes back to haunt him when Hammerschmidt writes a story linking him to Barnes' death. The presidency is finally set to be decided by a contingent election in the House. Neither Underwood nor Conway receive enough votes, however, so Underwood appoints Claire acting president until the House votes again. Underwood tries to convince Arizona Congressman Alex Romero (James Martinez) to vote in his favor, but when Underwood refuses to help him with his own agenda, Romero forms a committee to impeach him. In the days before the election, Underwood pushes Congress to formally declare war on ICO, and orders the CIA to kill one of the terrorists and make it look like he had died fleeing capture.
According to series producer Beau Willimon, the change in last name stemmed from the "Dickensian" feeling and "more legitimately American" sounding resonance of the name 'Underwood'. Whereas Urquhart is an aristocrat by birth, Underwood is a self-made man, having been born into a poor Southern family with an alcoholic father. Urquhart was one of television's first antiheroes, whereas Underwood follows the more recent rash of antiheroes that includes Tony Soprano of The Sopranos, Walter White of Breaking Bad, and Dexter Morgan of Dexter. However, unlike most other antiheroes, Underwood is not forced into immorality either by circumstance (White), birth (Soprano) or upbringing (Morgan). Unlike the right wing Urquhart, who leads the Conservative Party, Underwood is a member of the Democratic Party, but cares little for ideology in favor of "ruthless pragmatism" in furthering his own political influence and power. Spacey has received positive reviews for his portrayal of Underwood, but the character itself has been criticized for its repetitive nature and one-dimensionality.
